Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan (Urdu/Persian: مرزا اسد اللہ بیگ خان), pen-name Ghalib (Urdu/Persian: غالب, ġhālib means dominant) and (former pen-name) Asad (Urdu/Persian: اسد, asad means lion) (27 December 1797 – 15 February 1869), was a classical Urdu and Persian poet from India during British colonial rule. During his lifetime the Mughals were eclipsed and displaced by the British and finally deposed following the defeat of the Indian rebellion of 1857, events that he wrote of. Most notably, he wrote several ghazals during his life, which have since been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people. He is considered, in South Asia, to be one of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. Ghalib today remains popular not only in India and Pakistan but also amongst diaspora communities around the world.

QAWWALIS ..something which is surely BUT sadly dying in films and otherwise,not many people know what a QAWWALI is..it was a kind of music and song ,a mix of sufiana
and classical,where there was a whole mix of people singing the song,the instruments used were mainly dholak,harmonium,ghungroo...and the chorus clap,was sung mostly for occasions or competition.QAWWALI was something big during the mughal era...and it was to their credit that it was introduced here and QAWWALIS made a big way into hindi films,especially in the late 50s and late 60s.I love old hindi film music...so i always use to listen to these old son gs on radio or tv to update my knowledge and thats how i got to know about these Qawwalis in hindi films....and they were just so enjoyable and also they conveyed some deep meaning,if you are well versed in hindi-urdu.I love listening to QAWWALIS....and in a way i am happy that the new music directors are not making or composing them because i’ld not want them to insult or waste this form of music by making anything in the form of QAWWALI..

JAGJIT SINGH AND CHITHRA SINGH GAZALS





Jagjit Singh (Punjabi: ਜਗਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ, Hindi: जगजीत सिंह, Urdu: جگجیت سنگھ); born Jagmohan Singh; (8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, composer, music director, activist and entrepreneur. Known as "The Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian Ghazal singer Chitra Singh in 1970's and 80's as the first successful husband-wife duo act in the history of recorded Indian music. Together, they are considered to be the pioneers of modern Ghazal singing and regarded as most successful recording artistes outside the realm of Indian film music.

Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian Classical music, his style of composing and Gayaki (singing) is considered as Bol-pradhan, one that lays emphasis on words. He highlighted this in his music for films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Jagjit Singh is considered to be the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time.Jagjit Singh was the first Indian composer, and together with his wife Chitra Singh the first recording artist in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for their (India's first digitally recorded) album, Beyond Time (1987).

Jagjit Singh died on 10 October 2011.

Before this illness, his last concerts were held on 16 September 2011 at Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai, on 17th at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi, on 18 September at Noor Mahal, Karnal(organised by HIFA) and on 20 September at The Indian Public School in Dehradun

The tradition of qawwali is rooted in Persia (10th C.), and influences India/ Pakistan even today. Qawwali was influenced by dhrupad, among other things. Not only has music been passed on, but also the tradition of adapting to linguistic changes over the centuries.

It is not uncommon for a qawwali singer to express poetry in 4 or 5 languages - often prepared for a given audience. [Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Seraiki, Punjabi, Brij Basha, etc.] The same can be said for many khayal singers who sing thumri in smaller settings. (Amir Khan was an example.) Likewise, Nusrat sang many ghazals in his own style. These are moments when a great musician make common language and feelings extraordinary.


Known as SHAHENSHAH-E-QAWWALIi, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's name has been featured in Time magazine's 2006 list of 'Asian Heroes'.
(Punjabi: نصرت فتح علی خان (Shahmukhi)) (October 13, 1948 – August 16, 1997) a world-renowned Pakistani musician, was primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). Considered one of the greatest singers ever recorded, he possessed a six-octave vocal range and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours Extending the 600-year old Qawwali tradition of his family, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely credited with introducing Sufi music to international audiences] He was popularly known as Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, meaning The King of Kings of Qawwali.] Born in Faisalabad, Nusrat had his first public performance at age of 16, at his father's chelum. Khudaa hai aur Khudaa ke baad tuu hai

Shams-ud-duhaa Badr-ud-dujaa terii baRii tauqiir hai
suurat terii shaah-e-umam, Allah kii tasviir hai
aisii suurat terii kamlii vaale*

Allah ne paas bulaa hii liyaa*
bin dekhe Khudaa bhii rah na sakaa

tumhaaraa saanii risaalat-mu’aab ho na sakaa
tumhaaraa ko’ii kahiiN bhii javaab ho na sakaa
rasuul aur bhii aaye jahaan meN lekin
ko’ii bhii saahib-e-ummul kitaab ho na sakaa

meraaj* meN Jibriil se kahne lage shaah-e-umam
tuune to dekhe haiN hasiiN, batlaao to kaise haiN ham
ruuh-ul-Khudaa kahne lagaaa, ai naazniiN haq kii qasam

mere sohne kamlii vaalaRyaa, teraa aashiq kul zamaanaa ve
tere husn kii kyaa taariif karaaN, rabb aap teraa diivaanaa ve

royaa shab-e-hijraaN meN bahut ashq bahaayaa
itne meN musavvir ko zaraa rahm jo aayaa
naqshe ka’ii tasviiroN ke saamne vo laayaa
bola, ke ye Yusuf haiN, ye Isaa haiN, ye Musaa
maine kahaa inmeN se kisii par nahiiN shaidaa
jab saamne laayaa vo shabiih-e-shah-e-vaalaa
be-saaKhtaa us vaqt zubaaN se merii niklaa

duniyaa se kyaa, roz-e-jazaa unkaa hai mujhko aasraa
maiN huuN Ghulaam-e-mustafaa kaisii merii taqdiir hai
vallail ho yaa kah-kashaaN, zulf-e-nabii par hai fidaa
ismeN baNdhe haiN do-jahaaN, kitnii hasiiN zanjiir hai

dushman bhii kahte haiN yahii, kyaa baat hai sarkaar kii
na aaNkh meN qahr-o-Ghazab, na haath meN shamshiir

This qawwali is in praise of Prophet Muhammad. Such poetic compositions are known as naat. Prophet is addressed by many titles, two of them are Shams-ud-duha and Badr-ud-duja.



O Lord! Till the time there is life in my body
it should be devoted to you and an offering to your beloved [Muhammad].
It doesn’t matters if I have anything or not, but I pray “Ameen”
that at the time of death, my faith is safe.
[Note: “Ameen” is the name of the poet.]

God remembers the name of Muhammad with deference
such is the name of Muhammad, peace be upon him.
May God prohibit the fire of hell
on anyone whose heart is written the name of Muhammad.

On the heart that doesn’t love Muhammad
Allah never has mercy.
It is my belief that while remembering God
if this name [Muhammad] is not included then prayers wouldn’t be answered.

God said that His power has no limits
and my beloved’s [Muhammad] mercy has no limits.
When even angels couldn’t understand then how can men understand?
The greatness of the son of Amina has no limits.

The light of God is reflected in you
God is hidden but present are you.
Who can imagine your greatness, when
there is God and thereafter you.
O the bright sun!, O the moon in darkness!, you are revered greatly.
O the king of mankind!, your face is an image of God.
Such is your appearance, O the blanket draped one!
Note: Prophet used to drape himself in a black blanket sometimes. Hence, the salutation.
Eventually God called you to Him
even He could not resist seeing you.

Note: Refers to the journey of Prophet to God, called as ‘meraaj’ or the ascent.
O my beloved draped in blanket! The whole world loves you.
What to say of your beauty, even the Lord is mad in your love
On the night of ascension, King of the people [Muhammad] asked Jibriil [Gabriel]
You have seen the beautiful ones, tell me how am I?
The soul of God replied, O the beautiful one, by God!

Note: Refers to the journey of Prophet to God, called as ‘meraaj’ or the ascent.

Cried in the night of separation and shed tears in plenty.
Then the painter had a little mercy
and brought [before me] some sketches.
He said, this is Yusuf [Joseph], this is Isaa [Jesus] and this is Musaa [Prophet Moses].
I replied that I am not possessed by anyone of these.
When he brought the image of the King [Muhammad]
my tongue started reciting spontaneously

What have I to do with the world when I have his refuge on the Day of Judgement
I am the slave of Mustafaa*, how lucky I am!

Note: Another name of Prophet Muhammad.
Even his enemies accept too, what to say of the Master [Muhammad]
Neither his eyes are violent or [filled with] anger, nor there is a sword in his hands.

zulf ruKh pe machal jaayegii

aaj aayii na kal jaayegii

Do hold the tresses of your dress, lest it should
Fall off and obliterate your face;
And I won't be able to enjoy the splendour.

The moon light that enter in my courtyard
Will leave tomorrow if you are not here

The arrogant wind that blows through your house
May bring the dust and cover my face then.

My Darling.. fall in love with someone
And your life will change its direction and
You will realize the beauty of love then.

{Come now [else] the climate would change
[and] this moon-lit night would pass.

Remove the veil from [your] face
[so that] my desire is fulfilled.

Call her, O my sympathizers!
[and] my condition would improve.

If you are not coming, send a letter instead
[at least] I would feel better for some time.

Hold the restless tresses them for a while
[else] they would fall over the face.

Without you, moonlight in my house
came neither today nor it would tomorrow

Arrogant wind of your house
would blow dust at my face.

It is not possible to praise the beauty of beloved.
O the most beautiful one!
Even if you see my beloved, you would also say

[her] body is like ecstatic music
[her] body is like sweet-smelling moon-light
[her] body is like a blooming garden
[her] body is like the first ray of the Sun
[her] body is like carved statue, eye-catching and arresting
like sandalwood
like marble.

[Her] face is like a fresh flower.
Is it her face or moon?
[her] face is like a Ghazal, [her] face is like heart of Ghazal
[her] face is like a bud, [her] face is like lotus
[her] face is like manifestation of imagination
[her] face is like a dream, and its interpretation too.
[Her] face is like the tales of Alif Laila*.
One moment real, another moment imagination
[her] face is like no other face
[her] forehead is moonlike
so is her body.

I could not keep off my eyes after seeing her eyes
they are like two cups of wine and that too, burning
are these eyes or two doors of wine-house
her downward glance is abashness
her upward glance is prayer
when eyes look up after downward glance, is like a style
eyes, in which arrested are the sky and the earth
like Narcissus
[and] greyish

The story of the tresses of beloved is also long
tresses are like shadows on my heart
tresses are like over-cast clouds
tresses like some black spectre
when tresses are entangled, so also is the world
when tresses are straight, then writing this song becomes easy
when tresses spread apart then black night downs
when tresses sway then the night sings
tresses are chains, but so beautiful
silken

Words flee when I try to depict the beauty of my beloved.
Immaculate, soul stirring..
You may also praise her at the sheer sight of her.
Still to find another fairy more fairest than her now.

Like the beauty portrayed in the Ajanta Mural paintings..
The bewitching spell in her eyes..
Like the sweet scented melody..
As the heavenly philharmony floating in the firmament
Enrapturing and enervating the senses..
Like the sandal fragranced moon light
That beams down on a full moon day..
A garden in full bloom in the Spring..
Like the first radiant ray of the morning sun..
A captivating, eyeful statue made by the Creator
Carved out of sandalwood..
Or from the finest alabaster of Italy;


Is it the moon shining there or her face
I can not make out the truth.
Like a flower ever fresh and unwilted;
Like a beautiful GHAZAL or the eye of the Ghazal;
A bud of the Lotus in the Mansarovar
Or the incarnated imagination of the soul;
A splendid dream with its magnificent interpretation
It's like the never ending story in the
"Thousand and One nights"...
A medley of realities and imaginations;
A countenance unique in all aspects;
The forehead resembling that of an elephant;
A body vanquishing the butter, melting at my touch...

I cannot cast away my eyes from her eyes anymore,
They invite me to drink from those goblets
filled with the wine of her love, intoxicating me.
She looks down with coy meekness;
She looks up towards heaven in prayer..
Her glances up and down captivate the earth and
The sky together as Narcissus.

The fabric of life has been disturbed

So selfless should be the nature of wine-drinker
that the cup-bearer herself offers the cup.
Why do you ruin a victim of separation?
If anyone dies for you, then should he be buried?
At my last breath, I would have died, except for someone.
Though I can’t move my hands, I [still] have power in my eyes
let the cup and the wine remain in front of me.
Because I am….

Request her to stop tormenting me now
my eyes wait for her; [please] come to me.
Else…
For God’s sake, come to me.

Do not be so careless about the victim of your separation
O messenger do not talk to her long!
just say in short to come at onCE
When would you come?
It is the middle of the spring season
[and] all my friends are dressing up.
For whom shall I wear my yellow dress
when my dusky lover [Lord Krishna] is not with me?
Lamps on every wall, the entire city glittering
and I did not lighted a candle in my home
I keep on saying

Now even the sighs are tired to come to my lips
please come, as my eyes are now tired waiting for you.

kyaa ban ke qayaamat kaa sabab aaoge?

Will you come as the reason of the day of judgment?

chhaayii hai ghaTaa aur barastii hai sharaab
tum ab bhii na aaye to kab aaoge

The clouds have gathered and wine rains
if you do not come even now, when would you come?

At my last breath, I would have died, except for someone
otherwise the victim of separation should have died [by now].

O “Qamar”! The promise was of meeting in the night
the moon is now hidden and she should come now.

It is the season of flowers, intoxicate yourself
don’t be so persistent, intoxicate yourself.
O imbibers! The heavy-cast clouds burst forth to me
its mercy for you, and misfortune for penitence.
Intoxicate yourself.
Swaying dark clouds have come from the direction of Mecca
At least now intoxicate yourself.
O abstinent! Drink a little at least today
the night is dark and no one would see
Smile as it is spring.
Let the flowers bloom in the days of spring.
If there is no wine then drink the tears of suffering
[but] drink as these are the days of spring.
Go forth and sew the wounds of heart
live in the state of unconsciousness for some time.
Why so much restraint, O abstinent?
Drink because it is the charity from the tavern.
One has to give an account [of one’s deeds] on the day of judgment
so, drink as much as you can.
Just two drops are in the glass
drink them up under the guise of veil.
One who drinks furtively is a hypocrite
[and hence] drink without any thoughts.
Glass is of heart and wine is of faith
now dear sir, drink now at least.
Heavenly intoxication will engulf [you]
[so] drink the heavenly wine.
O “Adam”! Why so much persistence?
What is your problem, intoxicate yourself.

dekh kar aap kii javaanii ko aarzuu-e-sharaab hotii hai

aur is havaa ke saath uRaa jaa rahaa huuN maiN
ai vahshat-e-Khyaal, natiijaa tere supurd

qasdan Kharaab hone ko phir jaa rahaa huuN maiN
aap ke vaaste gunaah sahii, ham piyeN to sharaab bantii hai
sau GhamoN ko nichoRne ke baad, ek qatraa sharaab bantii hai
ham apni shaam ko jab nazr-e-jaam karte haiN
adab se hamko sitaare salaam karte haiN
gale lagaate haiN dushman ko bhi suruur meN ham
bahut bure haiN magar nek kaam karte haiN
sajaayeN kyuuN na ise ye saraai hai dil kii
yahaaN hasiin musaafir qayaam karte haiN
hayaat bech deN thoRe se pyaar ke badle
ye kaarobaar bhii tere Ghulaam karte haiN
hameN tuu ek nazar se navaaz de saaqii
ham apne hosh-o-Khirad tere naam karte haiN
“Qateel” kitne suKhan-saaz haiN ye sannaate
sukuut-e-shab meN jo hamse kalaam karte haiN

[Seeing your youth, I pine for wine.
Everyday I repent [and] everyday my desires tempt [me].
I am enjoying the breeze of the tresses of the cup-bearer
and I am swaying in this breeze

O dreariness of thoughts, I leave the result in your hands
I am pitting the cup (of wine) against the world
With such spiritlessness, I go to the day of judgment
that as if I am going to one of my rivals

The dust of the temple and [that of] the mosque is left far behind,
[it] seems that I am very near to the tavern.
Would there be another simpleton like Adam?
I am going once again to be ruined.
For you it might be a sin, for us it is just wine
after squeezing hundred of sorrows, one drop of wine is made.
When we gift our evening to a cup of wine
the stars salute me with reverence.
We embrace our enemies while intoxicated
no matter how bad we are, we still do [this] good deed.
Why should we not decorate the inn of heart
here rests the beautiful travelers.
I can trade my life for a little love
this business is also done by your slaves.
Comfort me with a glance, O cup-bearer!
We leave our thoughts and understanding to you.
